Above is a picture of WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair. Later today, here in Las Vegas at Summerslam, she will defend her championship against Sasha Banks. This will be a rematch. The pair faced off at WrestleMania 37, when they were the main event of night one. At that time, WrestleMania was a two-night affair.
The WWE women’s division has continued to grow over the last 25 years. Past CYInterview guests Luna Vachon [see here] and Trish Stratus [see here] kicked off an increase in women’s professional wrestling matches from the late 90s into the early 2000s. That led to an expanded women’s division today, with more competition and more mainstream exposure.
Before the days of Trish Stratus and Luna Vachon, the likes of past CYInterview guests the Fabulous Moolah and Penny Banner [see here] were some of the earliest women’s wrestlers, during what were known as the territorial days.
Presently, women’s matches in pro wrestling are taken more seriously and have gained more interest than in the past. Today’s rematch at Allegiant Stadium between Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks will have lots of fans watching.
Having the summer’s biggest pro wrestling event, in the Entertainment Capital of the World, demonstrates yet another reason why Las Vegas has something for everyone.
Editor’s Note: Sasha Banks did not compete in this match at Summerslam.
