The Emperor of Odds, John Avello of the Wynn Las Vegas Sportsbook Sits Down with Us at the Wynn to Talk Baseball, Football, Mayweather Fighting Again, Oakland Raiders and the New Poker Room at the Encore in Las Vegas

Since 2011, Wynn Las Vegas sportsbook manager John Avello has provided us with in-depth sports gambling analysis. With summer fast approaching, that means two things. First, baseball is in high gear. And second, the NFL and college football seasons are right around the corner.

This time live from the Wynn Las Vegas sportsbook, the veteran sports oddsmaker and CYInterview regular talked about some of the hot sports wagering topics, the new poker room at the Wynn Encore Resort and some possible happenings in the Las Vegas sports scene with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the Oakland Raiders.

At the Wynn Sportsbook, there is currently an opportunity to bet on whether you think the Chicago Cubs will win the World Series. The Cubs are currently one of the best teams in baseball and are one of the early favorites to make the postseason. On why he put the bet up, Mr. Avello said this:

“This is the second year it’s been up and the prop initially said will the Cubs win the World Series in 2015, 2016 or 2017. And so one year is down and we have two to go and they’re looking pretty good in this second year. The original price was the Cubs were about 5 to 1 to win any of those three years. Right now they’re 2 to 1 to win any of the remaining two years.”

A few months into the baseball season, the veteran sports oddsmaker says there have been some big bets on some teams to win the World Series:

“Probably not some of the teams you would expect to see it on, bets on Texas Rangers, bets on, well, the Mets of course and the Washington team, Nationals, but a lot of other teams who people feel that have a chance outside of those major teams. The [Chicago] White Sox is another team that drew quite a bit of money and the Cubs are a natural draw anyway. I can tell you, year in and year out, the Cubs are gonna be a loser for me if they win the World Series.”

Thoughts on the Oakland Raiders NFL team moving to Las Vegas?

“It would mean that I would have no staff to write any tickets. All of my staff are Raider fans. So on a Sunday, if you came in to bet the games, I’d have nobody able to take the bet. So I’m not sure I want them to come to town.”

There are new reports that Floyd Mayweather Jr. may come out of retirement for a 50th fight. Mr. Avello has always thought the undefeated fighter was not finished in the boxing ring:

“There’s no question in my mind he’ll have the 50th fight. Floyd Mayweather commands, you know, 50 million dollars when he has a fight. So why wouldn’t he come back and fight for that large of a purse. So I’m sure you’ll see him again.”

Finally, there are always new things going on at the Wynn properties in Las Vegas. At the Encore Resort, a new poker room opened on Thursday May 26th. John tells us his thoughts on the new poker room:

“It’s the best looking poker room that this town has ever had, just a magnificent facility. So if you like to play poker, you have to come here and visit.”
