On the eve of the Presidential Election, entertainment legend Cher appeared before a crowd, at Hillary Clinton’s Wynwood campaign office in Miami. The Oscar/Grammy/Emmy/Golden Globe winner was on hand to thank supporters of Secretary of State Clinton’s campaign. During her speech, Cher said of Republican nominee Donald Trump, “When someone tells you who they are believe them.” The superstar was referring to the offensive and questionable things Mr. Trump has said during his campaign. America is facing significant challenges. The nation is saddled with enormous debt. The recovery from the 2008 financial crisis has been slow. The political system in Washington has been almost completely taken over by self-interest and a lack of comprise. Blind partisanship has replaced the principle of putting country first. In many cases, holding office has turned into a ticket to increase personal wealth and fame, not serve the people and the public interest. This is not to say that we do not have many good people working as elected officials. We do. However, throw even the best people into a system that has been thoroughly contaminated by the institutionalization of self-interest and the nation’s prospects dim. Indeed, we are approaching a blackout. Ladies and gentlemen, these are tough times. But Donald J. Trump is not the answer.

So with only a few days until the 2016 Presidential Election, we welcome back the “Social Mayor of Miami,” Lea Black, to get her analysis on Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and the state of America. Throughout her life Mrs. Black has been involved in philanthropic work, helping at risk youth, as well as being an entrepreneur and building her own brand. Last year, Lea wrote her first novel, Red Carpets and White Lies, set against the Miami high society scene. In the world of politics, she held an event for President Obama in her home in Coral Gables some years back, among other things. As a veteran of the Real Housewives of Miami, Lea Black is in a particularly good position to assess a presidential election in which, seemingly, the ethos of the reality television genre has collided with the democratic process of choosing the next Commander in Chief.
If you want an insightful perspective on why the American political system is currently dysfunctional, talking to a former member of Congress is a good place to begin. From 1995 to 2006, Congressman Bob Ney of Ohio served during a time of economic prosperity. He and other Republican leaders worked with President Bill Clinton to balance the budget. It was a time when compromise still existed in Washington. Today, the word compromise is not something that often comes up regarding Democrats and Republicans. Back in 2013, we spoke with Congressman Ney about his book Sideswiped: Lessons Learned Courtesy of the Hit Men of Capitol Hill [see here]. Since then, he has become part of the media providing political analysis for Talk Media Service. He appears on numerous radio stations across the country. Additionally, this year he attended both the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention, where he had a front row seat to both parties’ troubles.
On Monday November 4th, former Governor of Florida, then Republican, Charlie Crist announced his plans to challenge Florida’s current governor, Republican Rick Scott, in the upcoming 2014 election cycle. This time, Mr. Crist will be running as a Democrat. Two days before his official announcement, Mr. Crist told CYInterview, at the InterContinental Miami™ Make-A-Wish Ball, that he was definitely going to run to be Governor of the Sunshine State again. The former Governor of Florida has taken time off from politics, since losing a race for the U.S. Senate in 2010 against Marco Rubio.
Though it has been at least seven years since the scandal involving high powered lobbyist Jack Abramoff shook Washington, D.C., there are still pieces to the story being revealed. There seems to be a consensus in America that today’s political leadership leaves a lot to be desired. Many believe there is an unhealthy mix of lobbyists and money with self-interested politicians all too open to being influenced on issues based on who curries favor with them. Former Republican Congressman and House Administration Committee Chairman Bob Ney of Ohio was entangled in the Abramoff lobbying scandal and ended up serving 17 months in prison.
