Coming into his fifth season as the head coach of Washington State, Mike Leach is riding a wave of success that the Cougars have not seen in more than a decade. Last year’s 9-4 campaign, with a Sun Bowl win, was a rare season of accomplishment for his football program. This year will focus on whether his team can compete for a Pac 12 crown and take the next step.

One of the best stories in college football this year is that Washington State head football coach, NY Times bestselling author and CYInterview regular Mike Leach took his team to the next level in the Pac 12. The season brought many positives that included impressive road wins at both Oregon and UCLA. Finishing the season at 8-4, the Cougars accepted an invite to play in the Sun Bowl on December 26th against the University of Miami.

We had a chance to preview his team’s upcoming season, but it would not be a Mike Leach conversation without discussing a variety of other topics. Coach tells us about his summer trip to Europe, to watch American football, gives his thoughts on everything Las Vegas, from buffets to gambling, and talks about his friend Matthew McConaughey’s upcoming movie on the Civil War. Additionally, he reveals two of his favorite movies from cinema history that he believes everyone should see. The two movies are Something Wild and The Last Seduction. With Washington State’s football team at 5-5, head coach and CYInterview regular Mike Leach has them within striking distance of a bowl. Back in July, we saw Mike down in Key West [see here] and he predicted his team would make postseason play. If the Cougars win one their remaining two games, they will, indeed, make the postseason.
Coach Leach joins us to talk about his team, as well as what he is up to beyond football. The NY Times Bestselling author of Swing Your Sword let us know that he has heard about the 6’4, 400 lbs. high school running back from his state, Tony Picard, who has been grabbing national attention. He also shared with us that he will be seeing his friend Matthew McConaughey’s film, Dallas Buyers Club, which has generated an Oscar buzz.

Coach Leach recently traveled to New Zealand, is finishing a book on Apache warrior Geronimo and, of course, is looking forward to the upcoming college football season season.
