The stars came out for the annual Catwalk for Charity event this past weekend. The yearly get-together of the Haitian community Miami’s luminaries and other celebrities benefits the Breakfast with Santa Organization. The event raises money to support underprivileged children in Miami’s Little Haiti, neighboring communities in South Florida and Haiti as well.
One of the stars in attendance this year was actress, singer and past CYInterview guest Tatyana Ali [see here]. Many will recall Ms. Ali for her role as Ashley Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, among many other things. Ms. Ali, a Harvard graduate, has continued her trajectory in show business with various acting and music projects.
Misty Upham’s story strips away the perceived glitz and glamour of Hollywood. She was working as a dog walker and cleaning a home – scrubbing a floor to be exact – when she was offered a chance to audition for one of 2013’s biggest films, August: Osage County. The Meryl Streep/Julia Roberts film, which garnered various Oscar nominations, has led the Native American actress to ongoing acting work. Hers is a story of being a housecleaner one minute to appearing onscreen with one of acting’s greatest living performers, Meryl Streep, the next.
It was back in 2008 that Misty starred alongside Oscar winning actress Melissa Leo in Frozen River. That movie netted her a Spirit Award nomination. The film, which yielded Melissa Leo an Oscar Nomination, could also have brought Misty a Supporting Actress nomination.
As a teenager, Abimbola "Bim" Fernandez says she came to New York to start working on her music dreams. Now 24, the Nigerian heiress is making what she calls “a small dent” in the music industry. Though she did not receive encouragement from her mega-wealthy father in the beginning, he came around because she persevered to achieve some of her singing and performing goals on her own.
This past weekend, Venue Magazine hosted a cover party for its March/April issue at Adore Nightclub on South Beach. The publication is run by editor Alexia Echevarria of The Real Housewives of Miami fame. See Ms. Echevarria’s past appearances on CYInterview [here] and [here].
The cover girl for the March/April edition of the magazine is actress, singer, songwriter and television personality Adrienne Bailon. Many will recall her as a Cheetah Girl in the Disney movie trilogy which kicked off with the film The Cheetah Girls in 2003. The movie was about a female music group. She was also the lead singer of the music group 3LW. At the end of 2013, audiences saw her with rapper Ja Rule in the movie I’m in Love with a Church Girl. This fall viewers will see Ms. Bailon when she co-hosts the syndicated daytime talk show The Real.
Edison Farrow, a long time promoter, has opened his first venue. Along with partner Ed de Caso, Mr. Farrow has brought his take on musical evening entertainment to Miami Beach. With the opening of The Cabaret South Beach, in the middle of December, the public has come to know a group of singers, who happen to be the venue's staff. One minute, they are bartenders and servers, the next they are on stage singing and covering the likes of Adele and Barbra Streisand.
Located between Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue, The Cabaret South Beach offers entertainment for the audience, who might not be interested in the typical club scene.
