Singer/Tribute Artist Jass Meagher is a Sensation as Mariah Carey, in Legends in Concert at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino
On Christmas Eve, we paid a visit to our friends at the longest running show on the Las Vegas Strip, Legends in Concert at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino. Appearing there, through December 30th, is Mariah Carey tribute artist Jass Meagher. See our photo with her above.
We had a chance to CYInterview Ms. Meagher after her performance Tuesday evening. She is the first person in the 37-year history of Legends in Concert in Las Vegas to get the chance to perform as Mariah Carey. The holiday show also includes tribute artists for Bono, Elvis Presley and Reba McEntire.
Originally from Scotland, Jass is a trained vocalist who attended a school in London called Vocal Tech. She can sing all styles of music. Mariah Carey’s repertoire has some of the more challenging songs for a performer, but Ms. Meagher says her music education helped make it easier to sing some of the pop star’s songs. When it comes to singing as Mariah, Jass Meagher puts her own original touch on it telling us:
“I never intend to do anything exactly the same way as Mariah. It’s an homage to her and I do it with my own voice and in a way that suits my style, as well as her style. So I’m just basically paying tribute to her voice and her singing rather than trying to copy her.”
Jass has toured the world for a variety of music projects. She’s performed as far away as Japan and now is here in Las Vegas. She has gained support from some of Mariah’s biggest fans and received mainstream press coverage worldwide, from the likes of VH1 Music to the BBC Radio to the Belfast Times.
Ms. Meagher’s father is from Botswana and her mother is from Scotland. Jass told us she identities with mixed race singers including Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys and Leona Lewis, for whom she has all performed tributes.
Jass Meagher is currently working on her own studio album as a singer, songwriter and producer. As far as what she wants people to know about her, she told us this:
“I’m very down to earth. I’m very fun. I’m very humble. I work really hard on vocals and I appreciate the audience more than they would ever know. … I never imagined that I would be in Las Vegas as the first ever Mariah Carey tribute to perform here [at Legends in Concert].”
