Professor/Attorney/Author Sandy Davidson Talks New Books
After a 30-year career as a professor at the University of Missouri, Sandy Davidson, an attorney, is now an author. She has written both a fiction and nonfiction book.
Sentenced for Silence: A Reporter’s Choice is a work of fiction about a reporter facing jail time for not revealing an anonymous source.
Death at Dark Hollow Hole is a work of nonfiction focusing on the demise of two people who were found in the Jacks Fork River in Missouri.
Dr. Davidson has her law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Connecticut-Storrs.
Sandy joined us on CYInterview to discuss her two new books.
Speaking about her passion for writing, Sandy Davidson said this:
“When I was a professor, of course, I had to publish, but I enjoyed that. So, I was doing publications, of course, concerning first amendment law, trying to protect journalists, executions. I have been interested in those. And I got to do a lot of academic work, but in the process, I was also attending trials, writing academic papers concerning them.”
On why she wrote the fiction book Sentenced for Silence: A Reporter’s Choice, she offered this:
“I want us to protect journalists. I do think journalists are under siege today. So, Sentenced for Silence is a book about a journalist who promises confidentiality to a source. Then a judge orders him to reveal that source. And at that point, the journalist has a choice, he can talk and walk, he just has to tell the judge what the judge wants to know. But the journalist has made a solemn promise, so not talking means going to jail.”
Focusing on her work of nonfiction, Death at Dark Hollow Hole, Sandy shared this:
“There’s mystery. I think a compelling mystery with, you’re trying to put all the pieces together, that’s another part of this book, not even the federal prosecutor could come up with a scenario that fit all the evidence. So, one thing I do at the end of the book, I let different people who were involved in the case give their own differing theories on how the deaths occurred.”
