Poker Great Tom McEvoy Joins Us for an In-Depth Discussion
In 1983, poker great Tom McEvoy defeated over 100 other players, including Doyle Brunson, to win the World Series of Poker’s Main Event.
By way of comparison, there were over 10,000 entrants in last year’s World Series of Poker’s Main Event.
Tom has written over a dozen books on poker. His latest is his 500 plus page autobiography titled Poker Pioneer.
Away from the tables, Mr. McEvoy has made many contributions to the game. One example was that he was instrumental in getting smoking banned from the poker tables.
Tom joined us for over an hour to share stories from his poker career, give his thoughts on the game today and provided advice for aspirant poker players among other topics.
Tom McEvoy shared a fun fact about his 1983 World Series of Poker Main Event win:
“What people don’t realize is that in 1983 when I won the World Series Main Event, Doyle Brunson made the final table and came in third. Everybody thought he’d win his third Main Event title, that he was the big favorite. Myself and the runner up Rod Peate had a different plan it turned out. But anyways, Doyle came in third. That was the last year he made the final table of a Main Event.”
This is Tom’s advice for people who want to be full time poker players:
“If they’re really gonna be serious, you have to have enough of a bankroll where you can survive for, six months would be the minimum, a year would be more likely. Now to live on for a year, because your poker money is separate from your living money.”
Here is one of the things Mr. McEvony hopes people take away from his book Poker Pioneer:
“If they have any interest in kind of the history of poker, how it’s evolved over the years, this book is all about that.”
