Overlord of Odds, Wynn Las Vegas Sportsbook Manager John Avello Talks First Weekend of NFL 2016, Props, NHL Vegas Start 2017, More

This Sunday is the first weekend for the 2016 season of the NFL. For sports gambling in Las Vegas, it means a busier weekend than usual at the sportsbook counters. Before the first weekend of regular season games begin, we welcome back Wynn Las Vegas sportsbook manager and CYInterview regular John Avello, to fill us in on who people are betting on to win the Super Bowl, what regular season props are available, putting the NFL lines together and more.

Back in May, at the Wynn sportsbook in Las Vegas, Mr. Avello shared his thoughts on the Oakland Raiders possibly moving to Vegas [see here]. With so much buzz about a possible new football stadium being built and the Raiders relocating to the city, we asked John his thoughts about the other pro team already committed to the town, the NHL franchise which will begin play in 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena.

On what the first weekend of the NFL is like for the head of a Las Vegas sportsbook, Wynn’s John Avello says this:

“This one just maybe is a little busier because we’re still getting acclimated to, you know, handling the crowds of football. So it always seems like the first ones busy and the toughest and it’ll get a little easier as time goes on.”

Who are people betting to win the Super Bowl? The head oddsmaker at the Wynn Las Vegas tells us this:

“There’s all the usual suspects are bet. Packers, Steelers, the Patriots, you know, the Cardinals, all the teams you would expect to be, Seattle Seahawks is in that mix of course. But people take shots sometimes on other teams that are 60, 75 to 1, you know, take chances on the Redskins. Maybe that division will fall apart and you know, teams like the Eagles also have the same division. They look for maybe some chances to find a team that might surprise and get bigger odds.”

John Avello says he is excited that the city of Las Vegas got a professional team with the NHL franchise beginning play in 2017. On if he thinks that will increase betting action on Hockey at the sportsbook, he says this:

“I don’t. I really don’t think so. I think they’ll be maybe a few more bets, people going to the game may want to get a little bet down first, but I don’t expect a big impact on it. No.”
