2021 was a polarizing year in American politics. The past year was certainly a challenging one. Coming into 2022, the United States is still dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, as positive cases are rising nationwide.
We were fortunate to have former congressional staffer, journalist and political prognosticator Cliston Brown join us, once again, on CYInterview to discuss 2021 in retrospect and to gain some insight into what to expect from 2022. We had an in-depth discussion with Mr. Brown, on the state of American politics.
Giving his overall thinking on 2021 politics in the United States, Cliston said this:
“I think that what stands out from 2021 is that Congress much like the country is very evenly and very deeply divided and I think 2022 is going to be more of the same.”
In reference to the proposed Build Back Better legislation that has not yet passed Congress, featured columnist Jay Bildstein made the point to Cliston that before new social programs are created, the politicians in Washington D.C. should work to fix current programs Americans rely on, including Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Cliston agreed with Jay’s analysis:
“I think we have very deep structural problems in this country financially and otherwise and those need to be addressed before anything else. You can’t build a third story on a house that has a shaky foundation. Your analogy is spot on.”
Additionally, Jay speaks in-depth with Cliston about what he believes is the most dangerous issue facing America and the world. It is an issue which few people are discussing anymore. It is the potential for nuclear war. On that topic, the political journalist offered this:
“It’s all a very, very big mess. And the question is, what do we do? Do we involve ourselves and possibly set off World War 3 or do we allow what we consider to be Russian and Chinese aggression? It’s a very, very difficult question. And I for one am very glad that Donald Trump is not in a position of dealing with it at the moment. But I’m not sure that any President is going to be able to deal with it in a satisfactory way.”
This 30 minute plus CYInterview touches on issues across the political spectrum and looks at them from various perspectives. It is sure to make for compelling listening.
