Final Thoughts on Vacationing in Mauritius
Las Vegas is the Entertainment Capital of the World. Consequently, it is a highly desired vacation spot. In Las Vegas you can stay at some of the greatest resorts on earth. We have extraordinary entertainment, dining, shopping and gaming here. And we are close to some of the greatest natural sites in the United States; think the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and Red Rock Canyon.
The world is a big place and while Las Vegas would be my number one suggestion for someone who is looking for a vacation spot, it is not the only tourism destination in the world. Over the last two weeks, I shared with you an overview of my recent trip to the Indian Ocean, African island nation of Mauritius [see here, here and here]. Like Las Vegas, the hospitality industry there is a big part of what makes that country tick.
Today, I wanted to offer some additional thoughts about the country. Perhaps, you might be thinking of going to an out of the way, resort destination. In that case, and if you have already visited Las Vegas multiple times, you might want to consider visiting Mauritius.
The main airport in Mauritius is the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. As with many countries, to pass through immigration quickly, have your passport ready and present a completed copy of your travel form. The Mauritius travel form includes basic contact information and health questions. It can be accessed on the nation’s government website. Make sure you also have your hotel reservation document on hand.
If you want to see parts of the country beyond your resort, the key is to make a relationship with a driver through one of the reputable car services. They can then take you to many places. Downloading WhatsApp onto your cellphone, to message these drivers to schedule trips, is essential. You will then also be able to know the cost for each trip by asking your transportation professional ahead of time. There is no Uber or Lyft on the island.
The Mauritian rupee is the country’s currency. Though American dollars are accepted in some places, it is best to carry Mauritian currency everywhere. Credit cards are widely accepted at most retail stores and restaurants.
I stayed at the Preskil Island Resort, which is approximately 10 to 15 minutes from the airport. Whether you are traveling alone, a couple or a family, this hotel is a great option. The staff is very helpful and there are many activities and things to do there.
Maurituas has many resorts that have a variety of water activities, spa treatments, restaurants, nighttime entertainment and beautiful beaches to take in the sun and experience the Indian Ocean.
While on a tour of the northern part of the country, my guide told me that the tourism industry was still recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. Though it may be on the other side of the world, Mauritius is highly worthwhile, exotic resort destination that will leave you with wonderful memories.
Last year, Netflix released the film Resort to Love starring past CYInterview guest, actress and singer Christina Milian [see here]. The entire movie was shot in Mauritius. You can read our review of the movie by clicking here.
My experience in Mauritius was excellent. Everything seemed quite safe. However, as with traveling anywhere, keep an eye on your possessions and things should be fine.
At the end of my trip, I was happy to get back to Las Vegas. Mauritius is fantastic, yet there is no place like the Entertainment Capital of the World.
