Filmmaker Dawn Mikkelson Speaks About New Documentary, Minnesota Mean

A new documentary film about a roller derby team in Minnesota is now out on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ and other media platforms.

Minnesota Mean tells the story of a women’s roller derby team. The film is directed by Dawn Mikkelson. The filmmaker recently joined us on CYInterview to speak about this sports project.

Speaking about what inspired Dawn to make the film Minnesota Mean, the filmmaker said this:

“I saw this community that I fell in love with, but will not be skating myself, I thought the next best thing thing would be to make a film about it. That’s the skill I can bring to the table. So, I followed them for a season and it was amazing. It was so awesome to be a part of that community in some way.”

Rob Gill spoke about the subject of team building relating to sales:

“But you can’t do anything in sales, I’ll bring it from the team building into sales unless you genuinely, truly want to help the other person and then that only comes from rapport, and time and being able to spend a lot of time with the client asking the right questions, really understanding what their goals and objectives are. At the same time, making sure you are circling back to them with a fiduciary responsibility, a responsibility to put the right plan in place.

With that, team building means that you gotta show up every day, you gotta show up with time, you gotta show up with enthusiasm, you gotta be focused, you gotta do the next thing right in front of you as best as you can. This is where like you have head coaches and assistant coaches, but even within the team there is an accountability structure because you always want to make sure that, you know, divisiveness isn’t coming into the group and how do you work through some of those challenges, which is really based on the highest level of education.”

Rob told Dawn about his new book Surviving Success:

“As I began to build businesses, all the trappings of success kind of got ahold of me and made some beautiful mistakes along the way that allowed me to either take that next step forward or a major retreat and that’s what the book’s about. It talks about the journey of not only how to create wealth, make wealth, but also how to keep your wealth.”
