Last week, I had the opportunity to visit New York City. I also had time to visit the state next door, New Jersey. All in all, my time up north was exciting.
While in the Big Apple last Saturday evening my assistant Christy Labonte and I attended the Barbra Streisand concert at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Ms. Streisand is originally from Brooklyn and the evening served as something of a homecoming. At the concert were celebrities including John Travolta, Liza Minnelli, Gayle King, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Faith Hill, to name just a few.
Christy – my right hand person, a great human being and, as it happens, my sister – spent some time with the inimitable Ms. Streisand last year. She had a chance to speak with her, in addition to filming a scene, as an extra, for Barbra’s upcoming movie entitled, The Guilt Trip. Christy is a huge Streisand fan and has seen her in concert before. She believes this might be the last time the golden voiced Ms. Streisand is on tour; only time will tell.
The concert itself was the best live performance I have ever seen. In fact, everyone I spoke with agreed that Ms. Streisand’s performance was even better than her last run of highly regarded concerts in 2006. Barbra’s duo with her son, Jason Gould, was touching. Her last song of the evening, Happy Days Are Here Again, was simply phenomenal.
Of course, Ms. Streisand performed her classics including The Way We Were, People and Evergreen. The audience got a surprise when Barbra sang the song Guilty, which she did not perform for the Brooklyn crowd on Thursday night, her first show.
The three hour concert flew by. Afterwards, Christy and three friends of ours, including author/director/award winning documentary filmmaker Angelo Guglielmo, met some of the celebrities in attendance, including actor John Travolta. Christy and I attended the University of Florida at Gainesville, which is near Ocala where Mr. Travolta spends a lot of his time.
A few minutes after speaking with John, country music superstar Faith Hill – known to many as the woman who does the musical intro for NBC’s Sunday Night Football – came down the hallway leading to the area where the VIP after-party for Ms. Streisand’s concert was being held. [You can see my photo with Faith Hill below.] Faith just recently released a new single titled American Heart which everyone should check out. I would love to have her and John on CYInterview in the not too distant future. We will see.
Later in the week, I will share more stories about the evening, other celebrities who attended the concert and the great Barbra Streisand herself.
