CYInterview Reunites Andy Hill and Rob Gill for March Madness

Basketball has had a lasting impact on Andy Hill and CYInterview sponsor Rob Gill.

Andy Hill played for the greatest men’s college basketball coach of all time, John Wooden. Coach Wooden led the UCLA Bruins to 10 national championships. Mr. Hill, who played guard, was on three of those championship teams.

After his playing days, Mr. Hill would find success in Hollywood as the President of CBS Productions. He helped make history at CBS, putting forward a slate of television shows leading the network to becoming the first to have an entire winning night of primetime television.

Rob Gill grew up witnessing basketball greatness. He is, through his sister’s marriage, related to the great Hurley basketball dynasty.

That dynasty is comprised of now retired, legendary high school basketball coach Bob Hurley Sr. of St. Anthony’s in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Coach Hurley’s sons Bobby Hurley and Danny Hurley were both successful basketball players. Bobby Hurley played college basketball at Duke University and with the Sacramento Kings in the NBA. Danny Hurley played college basketball at Seton Hall University.

Today, they are both collegiate basketball coaches. Danny is the head coach of the defending national champion UConn Huskies. Bobby Hurley is the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Being exposed to the greatness achieved by the Hurley family, Mr. Gill was able to take lessons learned from that to aid him in becoming a successful businessperson.

Additionally, Rob founded and runs his own AAU basketball league, EPIC Elite AAU.

In 2012, Messrs. Hill and Gill were part of a coaching panel, along with late, great college football head coach Mike Leach [see here]. Coach Leach was with us on CYInterview many times, where he continues to be greatly missed.

Since we are in the midst of March Madness, we welcomed back Andy Hill and Rob Gill, after almost 12 years, to talk about how basketball changed both their lives, coaching, the state of basketball today and more.

Reflecting on being coached by the great John Wooden, Andy Hill said this:

“I think in many ways the real power of being coached really well by a really great coach is that they really do become a part of your belief system, your organizing ideas, your values and so, you know, I think about him all the time. And by the way, I miss him. You know, I think he was really reflective of so much that was good in the sport.”

Reflecting on Coach Bob Hurley Sr.’s greatness, as proven at St. Anthony’s high school in Jersey City, New Jersey, Rob said this:

“When I came on the scene, let’s say in 1981, they were, you know, St. Anthony’s, it’s the greatest high school basketball program in history by the greatest high school basketball coach ever hands down, bar none; I’ll argue that with anybody. And what he had created there was unbelievable, 300 person school, raised money on his own to keep the school going, like the passion he had for basketball, his Xs and Os as a coach was probably at that level, second to none. Players there, you know, it was a team first. St. Anthony’s was the high power, not the player.”

Rob shared with Andy what his forthcoming book Surviving Success is about:

“As I made money, I felt like on some deep level that I didn’t deserve it. So, I did everything I can to give it back and I don’t mean in a good way, but in a way where self-destructive behavior, while staying sober by the way. So as I climbed the mountain of financial success, each new level up, think of it in sports or anything else, there was beautiful new challenges that as I was stepping into the light I looked at it as negatives not realizing that now those are the greatest gifts and the book is about how I was able to survive success.”
